A local men’s mental health walking group has been given a £500 boost thanks to the support of Calne Lions.
Men Walking and Talking - Calne Wiltshire, part of the wider Men Walking and Talking network - runs regular walks to encourage conversation and connection among men. The group said the donation will help them expand their presence in the community and continue their work to support mental wellbeing.
The Calne walks were originally launched in March by local resident Sean Broomhall, inspired by the tragic loss of a close friend to suicide. Determined to create a safe and informal space for men to share their struggles, Sean began a weekly walk through the town for anyone needing support or companionship. Leigh Randell now co-runs the walks alongside Sean.
Leigh told us the donation from Calne Lions reflects the strong community spirit in the town. “We are extremely grateful for the support we receive daily, and today I want to raise a special thank you to Calne Lions,” he said.
“With this donation we will be able to attend and pay for events in the town, purchase literature, banners and merchandise, and work with other local organisations. Most importantly, it helps us stay visible so people can approach us and find out more about what we do.”
He added: “Humans can be all too quick to criticise or moan when we are not happy, but we don’t shout loud enough about the good things. These donations have really shown the community spirit that exists in our little town.”
Earlier this year, Eartunes Radio and Standout Prints also supported the group by providing branded high-visibility vests to keep walkers safe during the darker evenings.
Men Walking and Talking say they look forward to collaborating with Calne Lions on future projects, as both groups continue their work to strengthen the community.
