CALNE Town Council marked International Women's Day today with an unveiling of a new portrait of Calne's first female town councillor and mayor, Edith Spackman.
Edith was born in Calne, educated in St. Mary's School, and achieved a lustrous career in nursing spanning 25 years, and after three attempts at gaining a seat on the council, she became Calne's first female councillor in 1929. Eight years later, she was proposed as Mayor of Calne and selected by unanimous decision on 9th November 1937.
She also served on the County Council Public Assistance Committee and the Chippenham Joint Isolation Committee, as well as contributions to the Red Cross, the Boy Scouts, the YMCA, and others.
Today, Spackman's service was commemorated with a civic reception hosted by Calne Town Mayor Jon Fisher, who unveiled a new portrait of the pioneer by artist Holly Webb.
In attendance were former female mayors from the past 20 years. The occasion was marked with a special cake which was cut by artist Holly and Mayoral Consort Tara Fisher.
