Polls will open on Thursday, 22nd January, for a by-election to elect a Town Councillor for the Calne Central ward following the resignation of Cllr Robert MacNaughton in November 2025.

Four candidates are standing in the election, with campaigning now well underway.

Conservative Party candidate Eliot Hall. Calne News approached Mr Hall for comment, but we haven't been contacted with a comment.

Labour Party candidate Jess Preston-Staples lives in the ward and is involved in a number of local community organisations, including Calne Pride and the junior parkrun. She has said she wants to ensure young people have a voice in decisions affecting the town.

Her priorities include securing fair investment for Calne, pushing for an early decision on the High Street road layout, protecting green spaces, improving facilities linked to new developments, and increasing provision for young people. She has also spoken out against the proposed closure of the Lower Compton Household Recycling Centre and has called on Wiltshire Council to reconsider the decision.

Reform UK candidate Paul Logan has lived in Calne since 2001 and works part-time at the Tesco superstore in the town. Originally born in Gibraltar, he said he regularly supports the town centre and local pubs.

“If elected, I intend to provide a new, fresh outlook to working with all Calne Town councillors and all residents for a better Calne for everyone,” he said.

Liberal Democrats candidate Adam Summers has lived in Calne all his life and currently works caring for people with dementia. He said his local knowledge gives him a strong understanding of residents’ needs.

“Calne is a wonderful place to live and I am ready to work hard to make it even better,” he said. “I have already begun the work – from reporting potholes and broken signs, to supporting the ongoing work of the Town Council on fixing our play parks.”

Polling will take place at two locations within the ward: Calne Corn Exchange, Town Hall, The Strand, and Coleman’s Farm, Angell Close.
