St Mary’s Church in Calne has announced Jemima Palfreyman as its new Director of Music. Already a well-known face in the local arts scene, Jemima brings with her a wealth of musical talent and a strong commitment to community life.

Since moving to the area a few years ago, Jemima has built a reputation as a gifted pianist and dedicated piano teacher. But her involvement goes far beyond the keyboard. She plays an active role in local events and organisations, serving on the organising committees for both Calne Music and Arts Festival and Calne Pride. She also supports Calne Choral, one of the town’s longest-established musical groups, as rehearsal pianist and occasional stand-in conductor.

Now taking the lead on music at St Mary’s, Jemima will be guiding the church choir and developing her organ playing — something she’s excited to explore further. She’s also launching an exciting new initiative: a youth choir called "Young Voices" for children in Year 5 and above. The group will rehearse weekly and is set to become a vibrant part of worship at the church.

This new appointment comes at a significant time for St Mary’s, which has just launched Project 2026 — a major appeal to enhance the church’s facilities. Plans include new toilets, a kitchen, full accessibility improvements, and the creation of modern community and performance spaces.
