After months of anticipation from local residents, Calne’s first Lidl store will finally open its doors next week.
The supermarket chain has confirmed its new Oxford Road branch will launch on Thursday 19th February, with the community invited to join in the celebrations from 8am, beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by the town’s Mayor, Cllr Ian Thorne, alongside players from Calne Town Youth Football Club.

The opening marks a milestone many shoppers in the town have been looking forward to, ending the need for regular trips to Chippenham or Royal Wootton Bassett for Lidl’s budget grocery range.
Visitors on the day can expect complimentary food sampling, prize giveaways and exclusive in-store offers available only to Calne customers.
The store will open 8am–10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am–4pm on Sundays. Lidl says the development represents a multi-million-pound investment in the town and has created up to 40 jobs.
Beyond shopping, the company says the store will support local organisations through its Feed it Back surplus food donation scheme, which redistributes unsold food to community groups.
Inside, the new 1,516m² sales area will include Lidl’s bakery and “Middle of Lidl” promotional section. Outside, there is parking for cars and bicycles, rapid electric vehicle chargers, and rooftop solar panels helping power the site.
Glen Stidever, Regional Head of Property for Lidl GB, said the company was pleased to bring its first store to Calne and thanked those involved in making the project possible.
