A local initiative called "Kindness in Calne," born from a personal mental health journey, is spreading cheer and promoting well-being throughout the community by leaving handmade gifts for people to find.

These "Acts of Kindness," as they are known, are designed to brighten someone's day and improve their mental health.

Dawn, the founder of Kindness in Calne, started the project a couple of years ago after experiencing the positive impact of a similar act of kindness herself. Driven to create that feeling for others, she initially worked solo before reaching out on Facebook to build a team.

Now, Kindness in Calne operates as an unregistered charity and is seeking new members to help expand its reach.

The group is appealing to crafty individuals who can spare a few hours a week to meet and create more "Acts of Kindness." Those who prefer to craft at home are also welcome, with members available to collect finished items. Materials can be provided if needed.

In addition, the initiative needs volunteers to distribute the handmade gifts throughout the community, aiming to leave approximately 2,000 "Acts of Kindness" this year. The local library regularly helps Kindness in Calne by hiding their handmade bookmarks within the books.

Beyond crafting and distribution, the group is also seeking assistance with administrative tasks, booking, and managing their stall at local events, where they sell handcrafted items to raise funds.

"Anybody that can spare time to help on the stalls would be amazing too," group member Diana told us.

Excitingly, Kindness in Calne has secured an allotment and is looking for volunteers with "green fingers" to help cultivate it. The edible produce grown will be shared amongst members, with any excess being donated to the Calne food bank.

The group's recent project, a vibrant pom-pom flower garden near the Honeymead mural, has already brought smiles to many faces. The garden was created to further enhance the area around the mural, with plans for future additions.

Kindness in Calne is also accepting donations of wool and other craft materials. Furthermore, they are exploring the possibility of organising craft classes, seeking specialists in various fields to lead workshops for the community.
