Calne Men’s Shed has become a valued part of the local community - a welcoming, creative space for adults of all ages to come together, share skills, and support one another. And despite the name, it’s not just for men; several women are active members, and anyone over 18 is welcome to join.
The group began life on Porte Marsh Industrial Estate, where members gathered to work on projects, chat over tea, and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded people. In 2020, when the building was sold for redevelopment, the Shed was forced to move. After a short spell at Calne Central, they found their current home in Anchor Road, next to Calne Recreation Ground.
Over the years, Calne Men’s Shed has become more than just a workshop. It offers emotional and mental health support for members — including bereaved spouses and those adjusting to life after retirement — as well as social outings, shared laughter, and, of course, plenty of tea and cake. The Shed also undertakes projects that benefit the wider community, helping to give members a sense of purpose and connection.
Now, to secure its future and expand what it offers, the Men’s Shed has launched a GoFundMe appeal. Jeff Rawlings, from the Shed, explained the money raised will help towards the general running costs and to contriube towards the cost of solar panels and reconfiguration of the interior of the shed.
The fundraising page outlines the group’s mission: "Calne Men's Shed isn’t just for men! We’re a welcoming space for everyone over 18, including those living with Alzheimer’s, and we run special sessions just for them. Our local charity is all about bringing people together to create, connect, and learn. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference and helps us keep the doors open while expanding what we offer.
"Every donation, no matter the size, helps the shed stay open and continue expanding their offer. Please consider supporting Calne Men's Shed (it's not just for men) if you can."
So far, the appeal has reached over £600 and members are keen to 'keep momentum going and reach £1000'. Donations can be made via the GoFundMe page here.
