Calne Men’s Shed (it's not just for men) is celebrating a major boost to its ongoing improvement plans after securing a £3,000 grant from The Hills Group Limited.

The funding, awarded through the Landfill Communities Fund and administered by Community First, will contribute towards the installation of solar panels at the group’s Anchor Road workshop. The upgrade is expected to significantly reduce running costs and cut the Shed’s reliance on fossil fuels, helping to put the organisation on a more sustainable footing.

The grant marks an important step forward for the community group, which has been fundraising throughout the year to support essential upgrades to its current base. Alongside the solar project, members are also working towards reconfiguring parts of the workshop and installing a wheelchair-accessible toilet to ensure the space remains inclusive for everyone who uses it.

Calne Men’s Shed has become a valued fixture of the town since relocating to Anchor Road. The group provides a friendly, creative space for adults of all ages including those adjusting to retirement, living alone, or seeking companionship - to learn new skills, work on personal and community projects, and enjoy much-needed social connection.

Members regularly undertake work that benefits the wider community, from repairing and rebuilding book-swap libraries to crafting benches, planters and other fixtures seen around Calne.

The Shed’s trustees say interest in the group continues to grow, with new members joining throughout the year and regular visitors dropping in to see the workshop in action.

Calne Men’s Shed (it’s not just for men) is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm for anyone who would like to visit, meet members and learn more about the group’s work.
