A new community-led initiative is calling on Calne residents and businesses to help make Christmas a little brighter for those who may be struggling this year.
Local resident Violette Simpson has launched the Calne Exchange Christmas Appeal, encouraging people to donate items and small gifts that will be packed into festive hampers and delivered to the elderly, vulnerable and local families in need.
“As we move through these autumn months my excitement for Christmas dinner with all the trimmings is ever increasing,” said Violette, “but I’m also mindful of those who find it a lonely or worrying time. I wanted to do something practical to help share a bit of hope and happiness around Calne this Christmas.”
The appeal is asking for donations of non-perishable foods, Christmas treats and toys, which will be packed into hampers and distributed by volunteers in December.
Residents and local businesses can support the appeal by donating items, encouraging staff or customers to take part, or volunteering time to help sort and deliver parcels.
Suggested donations include:
-
Christmas extras: mini Christmas puddings, custard, biscuits, candy canes, chocolates, crackers
-
For children: small toys, colouring books, crayons, storybooks, comics, school materials, gloves, hats and scarves
-
For adults: puzzles, notebooks, candles, gloves, socks, shampoo, shower gel
Donations can be dropped off at:
-
Atwell Martins, High Street
-
Odette Funeral Director, Phelps Parade
-
2zzWotzzNotzz, Church Street
-
Calne Slimming World with Georgie
Those who would benefit from receiving a parcel are also invited to get in touch confidentially.

“Your support — whether through donations, time or encouragement — helps remind everyone that Calne is a town that cares,” said Violette. “Together, we can share the virtues of faith, hope and charity this Christmas.”
