STORM Bert is set to hit the country this weekend with the Met Office issuing yellow weather warnings for the majority of the UK, including the Calne area.

While this week has seen temperatures drop below freezing and widespread frosts and snow flurries, a deep area of low pressure is set to bring us very wet and windy conditions over the weekend, as temperatures rise.

The Met Office have named the system Storm Bert, our second storm of the season and say it will bring strong winds and heavy rain from the early morning - with the west set to experience particularly heavy rain.

The rain warning comes into force for our area at 6am on Saturday 23rd November until 23.45 on Sunday 24th November. The wind warning is from 3pm Saturday to 9pm on Sunday.

Forecasters are warning of delays and cancellations to travel as road, rail, air and ferry services will be affected. There is also a chance of damage to buildings, powercuts and localised flooding.

Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has said: 'We're moving to Weather Warning status ahead of Storm Bert which brings a period of severe weather through Saturday 23rd November and into Sunday. Our current weather model shows a 24-hour period of heavy rain and high winds expected to sweep across much of our distribution areas. During this time, wind gusts are predicted to reach up to 52mph across inland areas.

We are now activating our well-rehearsed contingency plans and bringing in additional teams to deal with any damage to the network and subsequent faults, which may interrupt customers’ power supplies.

We will continue to monitor Storm Bert closely as it develops, and we will issue further updates depending on the forecast. '
