A Calne charity set up during the Covid pandemic to tackle poverty and social isolation has announced it will close at the end of the month unless new trustees step forward.

The trustees of Heart of the Community have confirmed that the charity plans to shut its doors for the final time on 30th January, after nearly six years supporting vulnerable people in the town.

The group was founded in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, after its organisers identified a growing need in Calne for both practical help and emotional support. The charity later moved to Coleman’s Farm Community Centre in June 2021, where it has since operated as a safe and welcoming space for its guests.

In a statement, the charity said the decision had been made “with a heavy heart” by its two remaining active trustees, who said they could no longer continue without additional support.

Founding members Mary and Ian Wakeham said they wanted to thank the volunteers and fellow trustees who had helped run the charity over the years.

Mary Wakeham said: “It’s been a long old journey, with lots of ups and downs. We have laughed together and cried together, and have basically just been there for our guests.

“Sadly, we feel as though we need to call it a day and hope our regulars find alternative places to visit and receive the same care and attention they have had with us.”

Over the years, Heart of the Community estimates it has supported around 100 people, many of whom were dealing with grief, mental health issues or loneliness. One-to-one support and personal counselling were a key part of the charity’s work.

In 2023, the group received National Lottery funding which allowed it to secure its base at Coleman’s Farm for a further 18 months. At the time, the charity said it was serving up to 84 meals a week, describing itself as an “extension of family” for many who attended.

Sadly, unless more volunteers and new trustees come forward in the next week or so to take on the roles, the charity will close permanently at the end of January.
