With the Great British Spring Clean just around the corner, there’s still plenty of time for Calne residents to join in and make a difference in their local community.

Running from 13th to 29th March 2026, the campaign, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, is the UK’s largest mass-action environmental initiative, encouraging people to pick up litter and help protect the local environment.

Wiltshire Council is supporting local groups, schools, and parish councils by lending litter-picking equipment. Last year, more than 150 community litter picks across the county collected over 9,800kg of rubbish as part of the council’s Don’t Mess with Wiltshire campaign.

Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways and Street Scene, said: "There's still time to sign up and be part of the Great British Spring Clean. Every bag of litter collected helps protect our wildlife, strengthens community spirit, and keeps Wiltshire looking its best. Thank you to the volunteers, schools and community groups who already go above and beyond - your efforts make a real difference every day. If you can spare a little time this March, becoming a #LitterHero is a simple way to help keep Wiltshire clean and green."

Paul Ashman, Community Engagement Manager at idverde, added: "The Great British Spring Clean is definitely not one to miss. By joining in, you'll help protect the environment, support local wildlife, and make your neighbourhood look great. It’s also a fun way to meet others, get outdoors, and boost your mood."

Schools can take part through the Great Big School Clean, helping pupils tidy their local area. Last year, more than 50 schools in Wiltshire took part, receiving children’s litter pickers, hi‑vis vests, and gloves. This year, schools are encouraged to link their clean-up activity with the new Wiltshire Biodiversity Champions programme, combining litter-picking with biodiversity initiatives for an even bigger impact.

Groups and schools can sign up, request equipment, or arrange waste collection by contacting idverde at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Where possible, volunteers should dispose of litter using household or public bins. For larger events (10+ bags), Wiltshire Council can arrange a dedicated collection.
