Wessex Water will begin a £500,000 project next month to upgrade more than two kilometres of ageing water mains near Bremhill.

The four-month scheme, due to start on 24th November, will see new pipes installed along Turf House Lane and Charlcutt Hill, delivered in two phases over 19 weeks. The work will pause for two weeks over Christmas, from 24th December to 5th January, before resuming in the new year.

During construction, sections of Turf House Lane and Charlcutt Hill will be closed to through traffic, with signposted diversions in place between Bremhill, Charlcutt and Lowbridge.

A spokesperson for Wessex Water said: “These upgrades are vital to ensure our customers continue to receive high-quality, reliable water supplies and underline our commitment to improving the network in rural Wiltshire.

"We’re working to reduce disruption as much as possible and have written to local residents and businesses to keep them informed.”

The Bremhill scheme takes the total invested in water main improvements in the Calne area to around £3 million over the past two years, following recent upgrades between Bremhill and Ratford, in Cherhill, and near Hilmarton.

Wessex Water says the work forms part of its ongoing modernisation of 12,000 kilometres of water mains supplying 1.4 million customers across the region. The company also aims to reduce leakage by 20 per cent between 2020 and 2030, with more than 15,600 leaks repaired across its network between April 2024 and March 2025.

The investment is part of a wider £160 million programme outlined in Wessex Water’s 2025–30 Business Plan, which includes new reservoirs, smart metering and customer support initiatives.
