Calne’s Christmas lights were switched on yesterday, bringing a sparkling finale to a full afternoon of festive celebrations across the town centre.

The event began at 1pm, with Phelps Parade, the High Street, The Strand, Bank Row and the Town Hall all buzzing with activity. Families enjoyed a wide range of stalls, music and seasonal attractions as the town marked the start of the Christmas season.

Santa’s Grotto in the Town Hall’s Council Chamber welcomed children throughout the afternoon, while outside the Bandstand area hosted a Nativity petting farm, giving youngsters the chance to meet the animals. The Town Hall was also home to a busy craft market, and Phelps Parade once again hosted the Love Calne Market.

St Mary’s Church opened its doors for the annual Christmas Tree Festival, with visitors heading in to admire dozens of decorated trees created by local groups.

Roaming performers brought extra festive cheer, with the Snow Lion making appearances across the town and Candy Cane Stilt Walkers entertaining crowds along The Strand. On the main stage, Chippenham Hospital Radio provided music and commentary throughout the afternoon, joined later by the Chippenham and Calne Good Afternoon Choir.

As daylight faded, excitement built for the Lantern Parade. Hundreds of schoolchildren and community groups gathered at Oxford Road before making their way into the town centre for 5pm, their handmade lanterns lighting the route.

This year, the honour of switching on Calne’s Christmas lights was given to art competition winners Cecelia and Tallilah. they joined the Mayor Ian Thorn on the main stage, where crowds counted down to the big moment. Seconds later the town centre lit up, followed immediately by a fireworks display above the rooftops.

The day drew large crowds into the heart of Calne and delivered another packed and magical celebration to mark the start of the festive season.
