Calne is marking Fairtrade Fortnight 2025 with a series of events and displays aimed at raising awareness of ethical trading and supporting Fairtrade producers around the world.
Fairtrade is a global movement that ensures farmers and producers in developing countries receive a fair price for their goods, work in safe conditions, and can invest in their communities. By choosing Fairtrade products, shoppers help support sustainable livelihoods and ethical trade practices.
From Monday, 22nd September, to Saturday, 4th October, a Fairtrade display will be on show at Calne Library, offering visitors information about Fairtrade products and the impact of ethical purchasing.
The highlight of the fortnight is a Fairtrade Tea Party, hosted at the library on Saturday, 27 September, from 4.30pm. The event will feature free Fairtrade tea, coffee, and cakes, a Fairtrade film, chocolate tasting, children’s quizzes and worksheets, and a raffle with prizes including a hamper and “Tea for Two at Bowood.”
Attendees will also have the chance to hear from Patrick Kaberia Muthaura, a Kenyan Fairtrade tea farmer who visited Calne last year, via a short video and a live Zoom appearance. Local MP Sarah Gibson is expected to attend in person, health permitting, or will join the event virtually.
In addition, the Calne Fairtrade Group is planning one-day Fairtrade product displays in Sainsbury’s on Friday 3rd October from 10.30am to 12.30pm providing shoppers the opportunity to learn more about Fairtrade goods and meet group volunteers.
The events are part of the community’s ongoing effort to promote ethical shopping and support Fairtrade farmers. The Calne Fairtrade Group encourages everyone to drop in, enjoy a cup of tea, and learn how simple choices can make a difference globally.
