AN election has been called to fill a vacant spot on Calne Town Council and Wiltshire Council.

The vacancy for the Chilvester & Abberd Ward has arisen due to the sad death of Cllr Tony Trotman who passed away on 30th November last year.

Cllr Trotman served Calne Town Council for over 30 years and was the Town Mayor four times.  He had represented Calne Chilvester and Abberd on Wiltshire Council since 2009.

The election will take place on 22nd February 2024 if contested.

Residents have until 26th January to submit a nomination form.

Meanwhile, it was announced this week that  Cllr Mark Mewett - North Ward, has stepped with immediate effect after six years in the role.

Cllr Mewett stated that one of his reasons for stepping down was his disappointment with the turnout of councillors for Cllr Tony Trotman's funeral which took place on 21st December.

This leaves a vacancy for the seat. If 10 or more electors request an election for this seat, one will be arranged. Otherwise the Town Council can co-opt. Residents have until 8 February to make this request.
