A Calne town councillor has unveiled an early-stage proposal to breathe new life into one of the town’s long-neglected historic buildings.
Cllr Orrey Pike is putting forward a vision to transform The Old Fire Station on Patford Street into a heritage-inspired co-working and community hub, combining restored architectural features with modern working amenities.
The Grade II listed building, which has stood empty for more than two decades, would be given a new purpose under the proposal—becoming a flexible workspace for local freelancers, remote workers, small businesses, and community events.
“This initiative will not only preserve a beloved historic site, but also create a dynamic space for Calne’s future thinkers and doers,” said Cllr Pike. “We’re excited to begin the next steps in consulting the community about this project!“
The early concept imagines a space that balances historical preservation with economic regeneration. Suggested features could include hot desks, private meeting pods, and small event spaces, all while retaining original design elements like exposed masonry and firehouse doors.
The building, which is currently in need of significant repair, would require approximately £400,000 for structural works, interior fit-out, and accessibility improvements. Potential funding routes could include Heritage Lottery Fund grants, social enterprise investment, and local regeneration schemes.
Cllr Pike stressed that no formal planning or funding applications have yet been submitted, and that community input will be a key part of the process moving forward.
“I’d love to hear what local people think. This is about building something for Calne—preserving the past while meeting the needs of the present,” he added.
