Police officers monitoring traffic near Cherhill during the Calne Bike Meet on Saturday 26 July were surprised to find that all of the speeding drivers caught in a targeted operation were motorists – not bikers.
The speed checks took place on the A4 in the 40mph zone close to Cherhill, as part of a wider road safety operation during one of the area’s busiest weekends for traffic and two-wheel enthusiasts.
16 vehicles were recorded exceeding the speed limit – and every single one was a car.
In contrast, the biking community was praised for demonstrating excellent road awareness and behaviour throughout the event.
The top speeds recorded were 56mph and 59mph – nearly 20mph over the posted limit. As a result of the initiative:
-
13 drivers may be offered a Speed Awareness Course or issued a £100 fine.
-
3 drivers will face a £100 fine and receive 3 penalty points on their licence.
-
Officers are now carrying out further checks on the offending vehicles for valid MOTs, insurance, and existing penalty point status.
-
Footage captured during the operation will also be reviewed to detect other offences, such as mobile phone use and seatbelt violations.
A spokesperson said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to keep roads safe for everyone, especially during busy seasonal events like Calne Bike Meet.
