A much-loved Calne musical institution is appealing for new players to join its ranks and help ensure the band continues for generations to come.

Calne Silver Band, which celebrated its centenary last year, is looking to welcome new members of all ages and abilities as numbers have fallen in recent years. A full band usually consists of around 28 players, but membership is currently at 15.

Secretary Brian Provis said the band is keen to hear from anyone who has played a brass instrument in the past, is learning to play, or would simply like to give it a go.

“We’ve been part of the town’s life for over 100 years, playing at local events and celebrations,” he said. “It would be a real loss to Calne if the band were to disappear, and we’d love to see some new faces come along.”

The band rehearses every Tuesday evening at 8pm at the Scout Hut in Calne. After a short break following Christmas, rehearsals will resume in February or March, making it an ideal time for new members to join.

No auditions are required, and the band prides itself on being friendly and supportive, with players helping one another to build confidence and skills.

Anyone interested in joining or finding out more can contact Brian Provis by email or on 07512 253309.
