CALNE'S Town Crier, Mark Wylie is celebrating yet another win at a Town Crier competition held in Rye earlier this month.
Town criers from across the country took part in the 71st National Town Criers’ Championship in East Sussex on Saturday, 12th October.
To mark the start of the competition, a procession, led by Ryebellion Drummers was held through the town to the Gun Gardens in Rye where the competition got underway.
Each participant was judged on volume, diction, clarity and inflection. Round one heard a 'home cry' from each competitor. This was followed by a 'themed cry' after which the winner was announced.
Mark Wylie won the accolade of National Town Criers’ Champion with second place going to Paul Gough, Nuneaton & Bedworth, Warwickshire and third to Jon Bartholomew, Bexhill, Sussex. Best-dressed crier: Jane Louise Smith, Bognor Regis Best-dressed consort: Faye Thompson, Petersfield, Hants Judges’ choice award: Jon Borthwick, Lewes, Sussex.
