A beautiful shrub has been planted in the gardens of Marden House in Calne, to celebrate the life Queen Elizabeth II.

Calne WI  was delighted to welcome Lady Lansdowne on 6th October to plant a Magnolia Stellata in the garden of Marden House to celebrate the life and reign of her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second.

Guests included members of Calne Morning WI and the volunteers who give their time to keep the gardens looking lovely.

The Queen joined the WI in 1943 as Princess Elizabeth, she would have celebrated 80 years of membership in January.  She became president of the Sandringham and West Newton branch in 2003, following in the footsteps of the Queen Mother.

Marden House is one of the oldest buildings in Calne originally, serving as home to the Wharfinger who handled traffic on the  Wilts and Berks Canal, which terminated here. Local people raised funds and obtained grants to renovate the building and convert it to a community and arts centre - a plaque at the front of the building commemorates a visit in 1988 from the then HRH Prince Charles, now King Charles III.
