Despite earlier forecasts of thunderstorms, the sun shone brightly on the Beversbrook Sports Centre on Monday, 12th May, as the Calne Over 65 Walk-Ball team gathered for a charity match to benefit Prostate Cancer UK.
The event, held in remembrance of three friends – Lenny, John, and Tym – who sadly lost their lives to cancer over the past decade, brought together nearly twenty players aged 65 to 83.
The game showcased the Corinthian spirit of the Calne Walkballers, who adhere to strict self-imposed rules: no running, minimal body contact, and keeping the ball below head height.
This special match saw spirited competition, impressive teamwork, and exceptional goalkeeping from 83-year-old Alan Rosekilly and 70-year-old Colin McDonnell. After a hard-fought contest, the Reds narrowly defeated the Yellows 4-3.
Roz Rumming, wife of the late John, presented an engraved silver salver to the Reds' captain, while she and Dorothy Jones awarded medals to all participants, leading to a few humorous moments as a few heads were bigger than the ribbons - 'it’s an age thing'.
Following the match, players enjoyed a splendid high tea in the pavilion, generously provided by Alan and Dorothy Jones. Warm tributes were paid to Lenny, John, and Tym, and over £700 (plus Gift-Aid) was raised for Prostate Cancer UK.
The event, organised by Mo Needham and David Hawkins, was a resounding success - supported by Calne Town Council and Beversbrook staff, who provided the venue free of charge.
The day was filled with sunshine, camaraderie, football, and afternoon tea, making it a truly memorable occasion.
