A CALNE Town Councillor will have to undergo further training and be required to re-sign the Council's Code of Conduct following a complaint made against him by a Council staff member.
The complaint relates to a comment made by Councillor Robert MacNaughton whilst on duty at the Winter Festival when MacNaughton repeated an inappropriate joke regarding the whereabouts of Santa, to one of his colleagues.
Following the complaint, Wiltshire Council's Standards Committee conducted an initial assesment and as a result Calne Town Council will now be offering Cllr MacNaughton further training.
A spokesperson for Calne Town Council has said: "Calne Town Council members are required to adhere to a code of conduct and all elected members are offered training to do their role effectively.
"Calne Town Council expects elected Councillors to treat people with respect and to act in a way that secures public confidence in them. Councillors should do nothing that brings themselves or the Council into disrepute."
The Chairperson of Personnel Sub-Committee, alongside the Town Mayor, Jon Fisher will meet with Councillor MacNaughton to set expectations of appropriate behaviour and he will be requiured to re-sign the Code of Conduct. Other instances of inappropriate language have previously been discussed with Councillor MacNaughton and the Personnel Sub Committee.
