An accomplished horsewoman from Calne has been selected by the The International Committee to be a member of the England Squad to compete at the Home International Championships.

This prestigious event will see teams from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland converging at the renowned British Horse Feeds & Golden Paste Company Red Dragon Festival of Endurance, taking place at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells from September 29th to October 1st, 2023.

With over 600 horses expected to participate over four days, the championship promises to be a thrilling showcase of equestrian talent.

Sally Mcilwaine's journey with her horse, Maisy, is a remarkable testament to their dedication and resilience. Maisy, an accidental purchase after catching Sally's eye in a field of youngsters, embarked on an extraordinary path. Originally destined for racing, Maisy faced challenges related to soundness and ulcers after an accident in her younger years. However, Sally and Maisy transitioned to endurance riding in 2006, overcoming setbacks and injuries. Their determination paid off in 2016 when they completed their first race ride, ultimately winning. Maisy's incredible agility and movement continue to leave Sally in awe.

The Home International Endurance Championship, an annual event, rotates its host country among England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Established in 1989, the championship aims to encourage riders of all levels and foster team spirit through international competition. Each participating country fields a team of twelve riders, along with two reserve riders. The final selection for the England squad followed a rigorous application and selection process conducted by the International Committee.

Bella Fricker, the Chef d’Equipe of the England squad, expressed her satisfaction with the chosen team, saying, "We are delighted with our final team. With such a huge pool of talent to choose from, the selection wasn’t easy. We have every confidence in the squad’s ability to tackle the Welsh hills, particularly with such established combinations to represent us."

Sally Mcilwaine, reflecting on her selection, shared her joy at being chosen with an older horse, remarking, "I'm really pleased to be selected with an older horse, having not really considered putting us forward as she isn't a young horse. She has been a work in progress for the better part of 21 years, and it feels like a huge achievement." The collective excitement and anticipation for the Home International Championships are palpable, and all eyes are on Sally Mcilwaine and the England Squad as they prepare to showcase their talent and determination on the challenging endurance trails.
