A thoughtful new addition is coming to Calne’s Curzon Street Cemetery this Christmas — thanks to local resident Lucy Holt, who has turned her personal loss into a project that will bring comfort to many.
Lucy, who has lived in Calne for 13 years, came up with the idea for a “Letters to Heaven” post box, where people can write messages to loved ones who have passed away.
The special post box will offer a peaceful space for reflection and remembrance, helping residents process grief and keep treasured memories alive.
Lucy was inspired after losing her dad earlier this year - a man she describes as her hero. “When my dad passed, it broke my heart into a million pieces,” Lucy said. “I believe that when someone dies, they live on in spirit. Having a Letters to Heaven Post Box here in Calne will bring comfort to people, giving them a place to sit, reflect, and write to those they miss - without fear of judgement.”
Her inspiration also came from the story of nine-year-old Matilda Handy, who in 2022 wished she could send letters to her grandparents in heaven. Lucy knew immediately that the idea could bring comfort to others in Calne too.
The project has received incredible community support. Odette Funeral Director has funded the post box and stand, while Signature Fencing will install it free of charge, donating both time and materials. Calne Town Council has also pledged funding for a bench, plants, and materials to create a calm, reflective space beside the chapel.
At a Town Council meeting on Monday, 6th October 2025, councillors voted unanimously in favour of the proposal - recognising the mental health and wellbeing benefits it will bring to the community.
Odette Funeral Director will also take on the role of safely collecting and storing the letters, which will then be passed to Rev. Casper Bush each Easter Sunday for a special ceremony where they’ll be cremated and symbolically “sent to heaven.”
The aim is to have the Letters to Heaven Post Box installed and ready for use in time for Christmas, giving local families the chance to send a message of love during what can be a difficult time of year.
“Those we love don’t go away — they walk beside us every day,” Lucy said. “No one truly dies until they’re forgotten. Let’s remember our loved ones and keep their memories alive in our hearts forever.”
