Residents of Calne are invited to a public meeting on Wednesday, 11th June at 7:00 PM in the large hall of Calne Town Hall to discuss the persistent odour issues across town.
The smell has been described as 'eggy', 'gassy' 'stagnant' and 'sulphurous' - often lingering over the town in the early hours of the morning. The Environment Agency has been working with Wiltshire Councill to identify the source of the odour, which has been causing widespread concern among residents since February.
The EA say they have substantiated odour reports in residential areas of Calne, likely caused by landfill gas from regulated activity in Compton Bassett.
There have been concerns from some residents that the smell may be affecting their health with a few saying they have experienced persistent headaches and sore eyes.
The meeting has been organised by Cllr Sam Pearce-Kearney, who has been hot on the trail of the eggy whiff since March, this Community Engagement event will provide a platform for residents to voice their concerns and hear directly from representatives of the Environment Agency, Wiltshire Council, and Hills Group.
"The community deserves answers," stated Cllr Sam Pearce-Kearney.
"Back when this all started people asked me to arrange a public meeting and this is why I have organised one. At the meeting hear from Hills, Environment Agency and Wiltshire Council what is causing the smell and crucially, what actions are being taken by all the organisations to eradicate it."
The meeting offers an opportunity for residents to understand the steps being taken to identify and resolve the source of the unpleasant smells.
