A concerned resident of Calne is calling for a reduction in the speed limit on Lickhill Road and School Road, citing increasing concerns over speeding and traffic volume in the area.
A formal "Highways Improvement Request Form," filed anonymously on 8th May, 2025, details an urgent need for action to improve road safety for pedestrians and residents alike.
The request highlights the particularly hazardous nature of these roads, especially considering the presence of Sunny Days Nursery, Fynamore School and The Firs Care Home.
"The roads are very busy with traffic," the request states, "and the on-street parking and chicanes cause drivers to accelerate through tight gaps particularly at busy times rather than slow and give way."
Delivery vehicles obstructing visibility by parking on pavements and double yellow lines further exacerbate the problem.
The document identifies specific "pinch points" where speeding is most prevalent: School Road after the roundabout at Harrier Close, the chicane near Northcote, and the chicane near Northlands Surgery.
The anonymous resident reports that the issue has been increasingly noticeable over time.
To address these concerns, the request proposes a reduction in the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph from where North Street and Lickhill Road start carrying on to School Road up to the A3102
Additional measures suggested include refreshing line painting, especially near the pedestrian island adjacent to Isis Close on School Road.
The resident also suggests a community-based approach, proposing signage designed by schoolchildren to remind drivers of the presence of children using the local parks, paths, and crossings.
The Town Council is expected to review the request at the next available Planning, Licensing and Highways Committee and determine the next steps in addressing these traffic safety concerns.
A spokesperson for Calne Town Council told us: "Usually, the way forward is to request a metro count which records speed of traffic then onto Wiltshire Council to make an order for the speed limit which can take up to 12 months."
