Police seized an e-scooter from a 15-year-old girl in Calne town centre on Friday, 16th January, after she was seen riding away from officers.

With help from Calne CCTV operators, the rider was later located on Church Street, where police say she was attempting to evade officers.

PCSO Mark Cook said officers had been taking action following concerns raised by residents about e-scooter use in the town.

“We have been targeting this issue following concerns raised by several members of the community,” he said. “Before Christmas, we issued advice on e-scooters and the restrictions on their use. Unfortunately, it appears that advice has not been taken on board by some parents.”

Wiltshire Police are reminding parents and young people that privately owned e-scooters cannot be used in public places, including pavements, parks and town centres.

E-scooters are classed as motor vehicles under the law, but because they do not meet legal requirements such as having number plates or lighting, they cannot be used on public roads. Police say riders can be stopped, reported and have their scooters seized.

Officers are encouraging anyone unsure about the rules to check official guidance on the Wiltshire Police website.
