The Calne Music and Arts Festival has drawn to a close for another year, following a packed week of performances, exhibitions and community events that drew strong audiences across the town.
Among the highlights was a performance by the Major Minors Children’s Choir on Monday evening. Their programme included some of the choir’s favourite pieces, alongside contributions from former members, with accompaniment from pianist Rachel Allard of the St Mary’s music department. William A. gave an energetic violin performance, while Clement delivered a solo folk song that drew warm applause. St Margaret’s Calne student Xenio also impressed with a rhythmic piano solo.
Reflecting on the evening, Director of Music Mrs Bethan Dudley Fryar said:“The Major Minors Children’s Choir has brought so many wonderful voices together, creating confidence in each individual child and encouraging a love of music. The children performing this evening have enjoyed singing and playing together and have been inspired by the beautiful sound they create as a collective. It has also been a delight to welcome back some of our Major Minors alum – as we say, ‘once a Major Minor, always a Major Minor!’”
Festival organisers said this year’s programme had been one of the most successful yet, with audiences praising the range and quality of performances. The chamber concert One, Two, Three and Four, featuring cellist Adrian Brendel, was described as “truly exceptional”, with musicians later performing an impromptu encore at The Lansdowne.
Festival Patron Brett Dean said: “CMAF this year was another cracker. Apart from so many great evenings and events at Marden House, from a Mozart Opera to the Magnificent AK’s men’s choir, the very best performances came as usual from our super dedicated committee and their own band of volunteers, a heart-warming display of selflessness and a sense of community. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
Festival Director John Boaler confirmed that plans are already underway for next year’s event, and has invited the Major Minors Choir to return to perform again in 2026.
