A 38-year-old man from Calne has been fined after pleading guilty to animal cruelty offences following the discovery of a severely malnourished dog at his residence.
Paul Brewster, of Dixon Way, appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on 30th April and admitted to failing to ensure the welfare of a protected animal and causing unnecessary suffering.
The case stemmed from a warrant executed at Brewster's address on May 29 last year, where officers discovered the dog, named Rusty, living in appalling conditions.
Authorities reported a kitchen filled with rubbish, including the dog's own excrement, and a complete absence of food or water for the animal.
Rusty was immediately seized and transported to a kennel for urgent medical attention. Fortunately, thanks to prompt intervention, Rusty is now recovering well and will be re-homed through a dedicated animal charity.
Investigating officer, PC Lizzie Wright, expressed her dismay at the severity of the situation. "This was a terrible case of animal cruelty," she stated.
"The dog was incredibly malnourished, and its skin was visibly in a bad shape."
However Paul Brewster has since contacted Calne News, wishing to put his side of the story across. Paul told us that his dog had been a family pet for over 12 years having had him since a puppy. Paul added: "My dog was also unwell at the time, that's why he was underweight, I took him to the vets before the raid and in court it was proved by the police statement saying how since my dog had medication he put his weight back on.
"Yes, he was not eating due to an illness he had, and yes as I admitted in court I should have done more."
Brewster was ultimately fined £285 and ordered to pay a £114 surcharge, in addition to £85 in costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.
