A 38-year-old man from Calne has been jailed for 15 years after being found guilty of sexually abusing a child over a number of years.

Adam Cockram was sentenced at Swindon Crown Court on Thursday (14th  August) after being convicted by a jury in July. He was found guilty of seven counts of adult sexual activity against a female child, one count of inciting sexual activity, taking an indecent photograph, and possession of a prohibited image.

As part of his sentence, Cockram must also abide by the terms of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 20 years. He will remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, is barred from working with children, and has been given a lifetime restraining order preventing him from contacting his victim or attending their address.

Detective Constable Julie Lewis, who led the investigation, said: “Cockram inflicted his abuse over a number of years to satisfy his own desires, with complete disregard to the impact this would have on his victim. It is thanks to the bravery of the survivor of this abuse that he has had to face the consequences of his crimes.

“I hope this sentence sends a powerful message to other abuse survivors that you do not have to suffer in silence. Please be assured that our team of specially trained officers will treat you with sensitivity and respect. You will be listened to and we will do everything we can to bring such offenders to justice.”

Wiltshire Police has shared useful information about support services available to survivors of sexual abuse. More details can be found on their website: Wiltshire Police – Support for Survivors of Sexual Abuse.
