THE moment of truth is upon us as the eagerly anticipated reopening of Calne High Street will come into force from Monday, 17th February.
The road will be open to southbound traffic only, from Wood Street to Curzon Street, as part of a trial aimed at improving traffic flow and air quality in the town.
The trial, which will last for up to 18 months, is being implemented under an experimental temporary traffic order (ETRO). During this time, Wiltshire Council will gather feedback from the community and evaluate the impact of the changes.
Cllr Nick Holder, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "We're pleased to have completed the work to open High Street to one-way traffic. We encourage residents to share their feedback on the changes, which will help us refine or adapt the scheme if necessary."
The changes aim to alleviate traffic congestion on The Square and improve air quality in the town.
Motorists are advised to follow the new traffic flow, which will see vehicles turning left from High Street onto Curzon Street. The council has also made adjustments to pedestrian safety, parking, and landscaping, including relocating disabled parking to Wood Street and moving tree planters to other areas.
Some residents have alrready said they feel the disabled parking in Wood Street is unsuitable due to location and size of the bays available. Other concerns have been the ability to cross the new road safely.
Residents can read the ETRO and comment on the changes by visiting the Wiltshire Council website: https://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/troconsultations
