Calne Fire Station faced a demanding evening yesterday, 26th June, responding to two separate emergency calls in quick succession.

The first call saw the Calne crew mobilised alongside Chippenham Fire Station to tackle a butane cylinder fire.

Fortunately, firefighters were able to contain the blaze and prevent any damage to nearby property. The cylinder was allowed to burn out safely under supervision before being cooled.

Following the incident, the fire station issued a safety reminder regarding gas appliances. "If you use any form of gas BBQ/heater or cooking appliances in the garden please check our website for safety information," a statement read, linking to the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service website https://www.dwfire.org.uk/safety/safety-outdoors/barbecues.

The second call of the evening involved a grass fire in a farmer's field. Reports indicated that disposable barbecues may have been used in the area recently. Several drink cans had also been left at the scene of the fire. Thankfully, firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, preventing it from spreading further.

This incident prompted a strong warning from the Calne Fire Station regarding the dangers of disposable barbecues, especially in dry conditions. “Disposable BBQ's are so dangerous being used in fields and the countryside when the ground is so dry and they can cause devastating fires," said a spokesperson for Calne Fire Station.

"Please take a picnic not a BBQ to avoid this from happening. Please also dispose of smoking materials safely."

The fire station further provided a link to their website with information on heath fires and disposable barbecues: https://www.dwfire.org.uk/.../heath-fires-and.../bapnabbq/
