A motion opposing the proposed closure of the Lower Compton Recycling Centre is due to be debated by Calne town councillors later this month, with some members warning it could lead to more waste going to landfill and place added pressure on residents.

The motion, submitted by Cllr Celia Stevens, calls on Wiltshire Council to halt any closure until a suitable alternative site is secured and ready for use, and will be considered at a forthcoming Full Council meeting.

It follows ongoing concern in the town over the future of the recycling centre, which councillors say plays a key role in helping residents dispose of waste responsibly.

Speaking ahead of the debate, Cllr Stevens said making recycling more difficult would risk people diverting recyclable items into household waste bins.

“A recycling centre is part of the infrastructure a town the size of Calne needs,” she said. “If access to recycling is reduced, people will understandably find other ways to dispose of waste.”

The motion argues that Calne already receives less infrastructure investment than comparable towns and should not lose a service relied upon by many residents.

It states: “Calne Town Council opposes the closure of Lower Compton Recycling Centre until another suitable, and local, site is found and ready for use. We urge Wiltshire Council to continue negotiations with Hills to enable this to happen.”

The proposal has been put forward by Cllr Stevens, seconded by Cllr Tara Fisher, and supported by councillors Mike Sankey and Bobby Seymour.

The matter is expected to be debated at the next Full Council meeting, scheduled for Monday 19th January, although it may be deferred to Monday 26th January.
