WORK is underway at Calne Bowls Club ahead of the green opening on Saturday 13th April.

The club, which was founded in 1914, is based on Anchor Road in Calne and its season runs from April to September.

Members compete in men’s, ladies’ and mixed leagues within Wiltshire. There is a club social night on Fridays, they hold quizzes and there is a licensed bar for members.

This year, Calne Bowls Club are holding two Open Days on 5th and 11th May, giving anyone aged from 10 up to 100 years old the opportunity to give the game a try. The game of bowls can enhance wellbeing, improve fitness and increase confidence and self-esteem.

Club member, Yvonne McColl told us: "No equipment is needed, just a pair of flat shoes or trainers, and our current members will be happy to help.

"We also have an extensive range of Bowling Aids for the less able, and we have just been awarded a grant to purchase a specialist bowls wheelchair."

Benches donated by past members are being given a fresh new look for the new season.

Yvonne explained: "We wanted to make the bowls club look attractive to both members and the public walking by and grab their attention, so decided to paint the benches in colourful colours to make it look like an inviting place, where you would like to spend some time."
