Another e-scooter rider has been issued with a formal warning after being seen riding it in the Recreation Ground and then again in The Pippin in Calne last week.

E-scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs) and are treated as motor vehicles under UK law. This classification requires compliance with legal requirements that include MOT, licensing, tax, and insurance.

Due to the absence of number plates, signaling ability, and visible rear lights, riding e-scooters on public roads is illegal. Moreover, it is against the law to use privately-owned e-scooters in any public place, including pavements, parks and town centres.

The only legal usage of a privately-owned e-scooter is on private property, with the landowner's consent.

PCSO Mark Cook said: “We have been targeting this issue, after concerns were raised by members of the community. Several warnings were issued last year, but since the start of January we have already seen several people riding e-scooters illegally.

"We will continue to give advice on e-scooters and the restrictions on using them if purchased. Anyone seen riding an e-scooter will be issued a warning and if underage, parents will be advised. We will remain focused on problem-solving interventions and will continue to engage with riders to making them aware of the law. Offenders who knowingly and persistently break the law will be dealt with appropriately, whereby the e-scooter will be seized, and the rider will be reported for any offences.”

Parents are urged to refrain from purchasing e-scooter for their children until they fully understand the regulations, as any child caught riding one will face a warning, and repeat offenders will have their e-scooters seized and could be reported for legal violations.

For further information on regulations, residents are encouraged to visit the Wiltshire Police website for comprehensive guidance.
