POLICE believe a vehicle found abandoned in Calne overnight could be linked to hare coursing activities in the area.

Officers say they have been dealing with the vehicle found today on Station Road, which they believe was abandoned overnight on 14th October.

Hare coursing is illegal, coursers will use 4x4 style vehicles to drive across fields, releasing a sight hound, often a lurcher-type dog to chase a hare.  The chase is often recorded for gambling purposes or for the status of having a good hare coursing dog for breeding.

Historically hare coursers have walked a line across fields to flush out a hare for a chase, but it appears now the use of thermal imaging scopes are used in order to locate hares huddled down resting in a field.

Police say they are urging the community to stay alert for hare coursing activity.

 What to look out for:
• Groups of people with lurcher-type dogs in fields
• Suspicious vehicles parked in rural locations
• Damage to crops and farmland

If you notice anything suspicious, please report it immediately. Contact 999 if a crime is in progress.
