A COMMUNITY group in Calne is now under new management and operating under a new name as the volunteers behind the hub hope to move forward with positivity.

It's a new dawn at the Marden Community Hub in Church Street as volunteers there are keen to welcome members of the community who need them most.

Formerly known as Calne Central and then Calne in Tune, the hub has been tainted in the past by controversy. But now with a new name, new volunteer management and a fresh clean look, those who are giving up their time to help others, are hoping to change all that with a warm and friendly welcome to visitors.

Carol from the hub told us: "We sell lots and lots of donated items, we supply hot meals 6 days a week for the lonely, vulnerable or anyone who wants to pop in. We serve from midday, and it’s on a first come, first served basis. We ask for a minimum donation of £2.00 for a 2-course meal."

Marden Community Hub is also a vital resource for veterans - another volunteer Gordon Alexander, holds a regular Naafi Break on Tuesday mornings where veterans, apart from those on essential duties, are able to get together with no agenda other than to chat over free tea and toast.

On some weekday evenings, the hub provides a venue for the Calne Samba Band and other musicians who hold their practice sessions there.

Also inside, you will find The Model Shop which used to be situated in Wood Street, many residents were saddened to see it go, but you can now visit them at the hub at 20 Church Street too.

Carol added: "Now the colder weather is on the horizon, we will struggle with the electric bill, so we are holding a Bingo night on the 18th October to help raise funds."
