This year, the streets of Calne have been alive with vibrant tales of uniquely designed pigs, all thanks to the imaginative initiative from the Calne Music and Arts Festival.
In a charming twist to the festivities, the Town Mayor, Councillor Jon Fisher, along with Director of Council Services Alison Robinson and Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Thorn, embarked on a cultural exchange with the town of Eningen unter Achalm, twinned with Calne.
During their recent visit, a beautifully decorated pig was gifted to Eningen by the Calne Town Mayor, symbolising the strong ties between the two communities. In a delightful surprise, the Eningen representatives reciprocated by sending back their own creatively adorned pig through the post—proving that pigs truly can fly!
The Eningen Pig, designed by Wolfgang Huckauf-Schwarz, features a striking palette inspired by the town logos—green, white, and black from Eningen, and green, blue, yellow, and white from Calne. Emphasising the theme of community and diversity, the design incorporates puzzle-piece motifs, symbolising the vibrant cultural landscape of both towns. Unique elements of each community are also depicted on the pig, from local landmarks to playful details like logos as earrings. With light-hearted touches and a heartfelt exchange, the 'tale of the two pigs' reflects the spirit of collaboration and creativity that defines this unique partnership between Calne and Eningen unter Achalm.
“It’s a wonderful pig designed by Wolfgang Huckauf-Schwarz,” remarked Mayor Fisher.
“We are thrilled that the people of Eningen embraced the idea of the pig exchange. The Pig Parade has really taken off here in Calne, and I am immensely proud of the Heritage Centre for displaying the top 50 chosen pigs in their recent exhibition. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Calne Music and Arts Festival, and it has been a resounding success.”
Calne maintains strong connections with its twin towns, which also include Charlieu in France and Caln Township in the USA. The tradition of town twinning began after the Second World War as a means to foster friendships and strengthen community bonds across borders.
Mayor Fisher is eager to reinvigorate the Town Twinning programme, inviting residents to get involved.
As both towns celebrate their rich heritage and artistic endeavors, the pig parade stands as a joyful reminder that, indeed, friendship knows no boundaries.
