WILTSHIRE Police have expressed their thanks to a member of the public who reported a suspected drink driver in Chippenham yesterday evening, 17th August.
A call was made to the police at about 7.20pm when a blues Mercedes had been spotted driving erratically - drifting into the opposite lane and speeding.
The Mercedes then turned into the Halfords car park in Foundry Lane and parked across two bays. The driver was seen stumbling towards Tesco.
Officers responding to the call spoke to the driver, a 38 year old man, who was 'unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol'.
The man refused to provide a specimen for analysis at the roadside, and was arrested on suspicion of failing to provide.
He was then further arrested for driving without a licence and without insurance. He remains in custody for questioning.
Neighbourhood Sergeant Jamie Ball said: “Thanks to a concerned member of the public, we were able to arrest the suspect before he got back behind the wheel of his car.
“As we have repeatedly said, drink driving is one of the fatal five offences. Alcohol slows your reactions significantly and impairs your judgement. There is no excuse for it.”
