THE A3102 remains closed today following yesterday's emergency closure due to a gas leak.
Emergency services were called to reports of a strong smell of gas early yesterday morning, 16th May.
A team of engineers from Wales & West Utilities were immediately sent out to investigate and they found a leak on a gas pipe running beneath the road.
The road was closed in both directions from the roundabout on White Horse Way to the junction with Studley Lane at Mile Elm.
Engineers have told us today that the job is proving to be complex and the work is still ongoing.
Josh Williams Trim, Wales & West Utilities Gas Emergency Service Manager for Calne said:
“We’re working in the A3102 road area of Calne to repair a leak on a gas pipe running beneath the road.
“In order to repair this leak, and to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe while we work, the A3102 is closed between Whetham and White Horse Way. A diversion route is in place, though we would advise motorists to plan alternative routes if possible.
“Our engineers are working as safely and as quickly as possible to fix the leak, however, this is a complex job and more work is needed. We do not yet know how long these works will take.
“We’re sorry for any disruption that this work will cause, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of local residents and road users while we carry out this essential repair.”
In the meantime residents are advised to allow plenty of time for their journey, especially at peak times such as school pick up.
