YOU may have noticed some work being carried out at Calne Town Hall yesterday as specialist steeplejacks were seen scaling the tower.
Somerset based company Dawson Steeplejacks were at the Town Hall yesterday to work on the weathervane.
The team removed and refurbished the weathervane and support. The completed job saw the weathervane painted and gilded with 23.5ct gold leaf.
Calne Town Hall is a Grade II listed building of Franco-Flemish Victorian Gothic style. It was opened in 1886 on the site of the old town mill. Bath architect Bryan Oliver won a competition in 1883 to design the Town Hall, with construction funded through public contributions of £6505.
In recent years the building has seen a number of refurbishments with work carried out to repair the lead work in the recessed gutters on the Strand and Tower sides of the building. The wooden floors have also been refurbished.
