Calne Town Council have issued an invitation to local artists to submit their designs for a commemorative artwork which will become a permanent structure to commemorate and celebrate the way Calne came together during the pandemic.

covid memorialOne of the first towns across the country to commission a permanent COVID sculpture, Calne is paying tribute to those who have lost their lives and acknowledging the admirable and inspirational contribution of key workers, volunteers and local communities during the pandemic crisis.

The location for the installation has yet to be chosen and any artists who submit a design will be expected to have identified a suitable space within Calne town. The current planned timeframe for the work is July 2022 with an official unveilling date being 16th July 2022.

Calne Town Council say: "The Covid-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented set of circumstances world-wide. No community was left untouched by the effects of Covid-19 on the health and wellbeing of people within those communities and beyond. The pandemic brought about unprecedented illness, anxiety and uncertainty for people all over the world and the effects are likely to last for generations.

"Whilst the lasting impact of Covid-19 is negative, it is important not to forget that amongst all the devastation, uncertainty and isolation there were some positives. The pandemic brought many local communities together to support one another through the wide-ranging challenges brought about by Covid.

The community response from the people of Calne was unprecedented and showed a real dedication to supporting friends, neighbours, businesses and the wider community in the depths of a world-wide pandemic. New community groups were formed and residents went above and beyond in a myriad of ways to support one another through the pandemic. The Calne community has undoubtedly emerged from the pandemic with a stronger bond, and this is something that Calne Town Council would like to commemorate and celebrate."

There is no payment for the initial design and any selected artwork would need to be within a budget of circa £5k-£8k (to include creation and installation) which is subject to approval by Calne Town Council.
