Land opposite the main Tesco store, east of the Oxford Road roundabout, has been sold by Wiltshire Council to a rival supermarket.
The council announced yesterday that they had completed the sale of the land to Lidl United Kingdom Plc.
The recent closure of the Co-Operative store in Mill Street has left the town with the choice of only Sainsbury's or Tesco and many residents are looking forward to the opening of discount supermarket, Lidl. Other residents feel that the town simply doesn't need more construction and further building on our surrounding fields.
It is currently unclear when and to what scale construction will begin at the site , Calne News has approached Lidl for comment.
Cllr Ian Thorn, Lib Dem member of Wiltshire Council for Calne, told Calne News: "With the closure of the Co-op, providing more food shopping in Calne is to be welcomed. However I hope that the rest of the site can still be used for other employment uses."
